A course with Marc Beuvain
A rare opportunity to learn about the third and fourth chapters of the Yoga sutras of Patanjali, this will be a detailed course, providing even the word by word translation of every sutra. Intense, but applicable, down to earth, and wholly accessible.
Comprising 195 short verses divided into four chapters, the Yoga sutra-s of Patanjali are a highly respected text, and have been the reference point for yoga masters for many centuries. If ever two masters were to have diverging points of view about their philosophy, the sutra-s were consulted, to find out who was right. The masters even went so far as to say that any teachings in disagreement with the yoga sutra-s, were not yoga.
The yoga sutra-s fall into the “anusasana” category of traditional Indian teachings, meaning “that which is to be experienced”. So experiential rather than intellectual, the yoga sutra-s are not just there to be talked about, this is practical teaching with a purpose.
Many teachings from the first and second chapters of this work are now well known around the world, like the eight limbs of yoga for example. During this course we will be venturing into the more rarely chartered territory of the third and fourth chapters. Just as accessible, just as relevant to daily existence as the first half of the text, the third and fourth chapters explore the subtler areas of yoga practice. The third chapter is all about meditation and its role in personal transformation. Patanjali reveals the hugely important role of meditation in Yoga by dedicating a whole chapter to the subject – surprising, considering that only three short verses in the entire text are used to explain the practice of postures. Detailed study of this chapter will explore all the kinds of meditation traditionally taught, their benefits, and also their dangers for the inadvertent enthusiast. The fourth chapter presents the ultimate goal of yoga: the freedom of consciousness. Patanjali explains what it is to live fully, to live from the heart. He tells us how to get there, and also warns of the pitfalls and hazards we may meet along the way. He also describes the qualities a yoga teacher must have, and what their role should be in assisting others through personal transformation, towards conscious living.
So, experiential teaching of great value for anyone on an introspective quest, particularly useful for yoga students, and teachers who wish to know themselves fully before attempting to help others in search of holistic health.
